Surgical Navigation Technologies – Fundamentals and Futures
Timothy J. Schaewe, Ph.D., Principal Research Engineer for Medtronic, Inc.
Twenty years ago, the concept of real-time, three-dimensional tracking of surgical instruments and interactive display of instrument position and location in the context of high-resolution, three-dimensional MRI and CT images existed only in the minds (and the laboratories) of researchers. Today, the use of image-guided surgery systems has become the standard of practice in cranial and spinal neurosurgery and, in some cases, enables surgeons to safely and effectively perform complex procedures that were once considered impossible. This workshop will present the fundamental technical elements of image-guided surgery using both live demonstrations and review of exemplary brain and spine surgery cases, illustrating how the united efforts of multiple engineering disciplines in close collaboration with neurosurgeons and radiologists can realize a revolutionary change in the practice of medicine. The workshop will conclude with a discussion of active areas of research and development in the field, highlighting opportunities for students and young professionals to engage in the ongoing effort to alleviate pain, restore health and extend life.
